DIY Laundry Room Wall Decor Refresh for a Small Laundry Room

Moving The Laundry Upstairs From The Basement

In October of 2019, we started construction on an addition to our current house. We added a primary suite, and decided to move our laundry space from our basement to the new addition, creating a mudroom/laundry room that leads to the outside.

At first it wasn't part of the equation to add the laundry area, but the more we thought about it, the more it made sense. I have not regretted that decision one bit ever since.

At the time, I chose to keep the laundry room decor simple. I had an accent color of a little darker yet muted green. I found a great of art work at HomeGoods that really looked good on the larger wall in the space. I kept the other colors simple as well, grays and whites.

I also had our contractor build a small cabinet that would house the laundry detergent, trash can and other laundry needs. I wasn't ready to commit to putting a shelf up on the wall. Another consideration when designing this space was that it's open to the hallway so it needed to be neat and organized.

Wallpaper Choice From Kate Zaremba

After having lived in this space now for over a year, I decided it was time to change it up a bit and have it feel more like me while also have it flow with the rest of the decor and color in our house.

I found this amazing wallpaper on-line by Kate Zaremba Company and the minute I saw it, I knew it was just what I was looking for! I loved the organic design and the pops of bright colors of the Muse Lane wallpaper design. I went to her website, ordered a sample and patiently waited.

When the sample arrived, it was more beautiful in person that I could have imagined. I showed it to my husband to make sure he was on board with what I was thinking. As soon as he gave the thumbs up, I measured the wall, and placed my order.

Quick and Easy DIY

Originally, I was looking at peel and stick wallpaper options. But when I saw this pattern, I was willing to give the wallpaper with adhesive on the back a chance. Luckily, on Kate Zaremba's website, they have easy to follow instructions on how to install the paper.

This past weekend, my husband and I decided to tackle this do it yourself project. We unplugged and disconnected the washer and dryer from the wall and moved them out a bit. My husband also disconnected the power since we would be working around the electrical sockets with wet paper.

We then measured out where the sockets and such would be and started by measuring the paper and cutting. After that, it really was easy. We followed the directions to a tee and in about an hour we had it all finished. Since we were only doing a small space, it was not that laborious.

Almost There...

And because one thing leads to another, I realized I needed to paint the storage cabinet. I had a few colors from previous projects and narrowed down the colors between Sherwin Williams SW 9059 Silken Peacock and SW 6425 Relentless Olive.

In the end I went with Relentless Olive and I really love the way it turned out. I am so incredibly happy with the entire space. It reflects more of my passion for color and fun design. For now I plan on leaving the wallpaper as is because it's so beautiful to look at. I am debating on a few art options for the wall next it above the drying rack. I do know that the art needs to be graphic in nature and more than likely will be black and white.

Is Wallpaper Coming Back In Style?

All in all, I would give this project a 10 out of 10 because it was affordable, easy to do ourselves and it considerably changed the feel and look of the room.

Now and days there are so many great options out there for wallpaper. Honestly, the possibilities are endless. A few companies I would check out are Tempaper, Spoonflower, Chasing Paper, but also a lot of other places are starting to carry it like Home Depot, Target, Urban Outfitters, the list goes on and on.

If you are considering peel and stick wallpaper, or even wallpaper with adhesive on the back, I would recommend:

1. Order a sample to make sure you like it and the colors work with what you are thinking.

2. If the sample is right, follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to measure your space to determine the number of rolls you will need to order.

3. Order the Paper and patiently wait for it's arrival!

4. Get excited!

5. When the paper arrives, decide whether you will put the paper up or you are unsure, hire a professional.

6. When the paper is up, sit back, relax and enjoy your new space.
